Standing Up For Things That Matter

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
- Martin Luther King Jr.

These precious words have still held strong during tested times and are yet again needed in the world today. As the world undergoes unprecedented events and struggles to combat social ills such as racism and inequality, it has become vital that young people today stand up for what is right. And, what is right you might ask? It is what matters. This extends to ensuring peace, justice, and equality, without which social progress ceases to exist.

If we take a closer look at this quote, it goes a lot deeper into being just a mere form of guidance. It unlocks the philosophy that compels humans to do what is right. In its essence, it talks about how a person experiences death or the closing of the final chapter of their life when they refuse to stand up for what is right. When they turn a blind eye or choose to stay silent, their presence as a responsible and productive member of society diminishes as they are the same as someone who no longer exists.

Thus, to be a productive member of society it is important to stand up for important matters. This can be done after having seen or experienced social injustice and inequality and choosing to speak up about it. To prevent the passion within oneself from dying out and becoming immune to the ills present in society, it is important to speak up and address what is wrong, and do so using non-violent means.

You can:
  • Voice your concerns and call out injustice through online platforms. Writing blogs and articles can help raise awareness of issues and provide people with authentic and accurate information.
  • Participate in charity events and volunteer work that is aimed at helping combat injustice and inequality. Funds raised at charity events can be used to help those struggling to succeed in life.
  • Encourage others to stand up for what is right. This helps create a domino effect. Never feel intimidated or think that one person alone cannot make a difference!
  • Seek help from those who can help address injustice and inequality. This can be through reaching out to relevant authorities and stakeholders nearby.

Lastly, it is important to look back and analyze the way society is moving forward. Is it on a path that is progressive and peaceful? If not, then standing up for what is right and what matters is the way to go. This is what Youth With a Future seeks to ensure. Through various training programs and workshops, we help equip the youth with the skills and tools needed to stand up for what matters and help create a peaceful society.
