[Book Review] Life in the Presence of God: Practices for Living in Light of Eternity

As an avid reader, I’ve come across many a book that has inspired me and enlightened me, and Life in the Presence of God: Practices for Living in Light of Eternity by Kenneth Boa has had a huge role to play. For this reason, I chose to share a book review on the book in question—perhaps others will find the same guidance that I did!

A recurrent theme in all of the teachings of religion and Scripture is that of living a Christ-centered life and abiding in Christ.

However, what is the reality of the situation? How can we seek to abide in Christ, to truly experience God in our daily living?

In his book, Kenneth Boa seeks to answer exactly these questions. Not only does he strive to provide readers with a clearer understanding of what it truly means to live in God’s presence, but also how to do so in way that is practical.

The author questions that if God is everywhere, why don’t we tend to experience his presence more. He points out how life is currently littered with numerous distractions—with social media, television, and the ever present need to fit in, there is little room left for any spirituality.

Throughout the course of his book, he seeks to help individuals learn how to drown out the white noise and tune into God’s presence—it is everywhere, and it is always with us. All we need to do is make a conscious effort to realize it and experience it amidst the hullabaloo of daily living.

He offers quite the accessible and practical guide on what to do to help enhance the sense of God’s presence, which in turn lends itself to establishing a deeper intimacy with God. It calls for actively making time out of the constant influx of information and distraction, to keep the allure of technology in check.

There is no great magic trick to be done in order to full awash life with God’s presence. All it takes is considerable self-control, and a number of practical exercises and disciplines that can help us draw closer and closer to God during our time on this earth.

Books can be truly powerful tool in the journey towards enlightenment and change. By invoking core values that brings us closer to God, we can seek to follow by example and incorporate the wisdom of such books into our real lives.
